Robust Design is based on fully objective and quantifiable criteria.

Robust Design was originally developed by Dr. Genichi Taguchi, a Japanese quality guru, who defined Robust Design as "reducing variation in a product without eliminating the causes of the variation". In other words, making the product insensitive to variation.


Internal variation

A Robust Design is insensitive to abrasion such as the wear of a machine and aging of materials.

External variation

A Robust Design is insensitive to environmental conditions such as temperature fluctuations, humidity changes and dust.

Unit-to-unit variation

A Robust Design is insensitive to variations between components caused by divergence in materials, processes and equipment.
